Phillips’ original featured expanding electronic beats supporting Herring’s vocals and Sudan Archives’ distinctive style. The original “Tall Tales” came from Kennebec’s sophomore album “Without Star or Compass”, where Phillips aimed to write “for my friends and others rather than for myself.” His collaboration with Herring developed naturally after they clicked on shared ideas, culminating in a three-day Portland recording session. Herring’s lyrics balanced “magic and folklore in the natural world” with narrative structure.
