Kennebec – Tall Tales (feat. Hemlock Ernst & Sudan Archives) [Joe Armon-Jones Dub Remix]

Joe Armon-Jones takes Kennebec’s “Tall Tales” into dub territory, reworking the original collaboration between Hemlock Ernst (Samuel T. Herring’s rap alias) and Sudan Archives. The remix strips away some of the original’s electronic beats while amplifying the track’s cinematic qualities through Armon-Jones’ jazz-influenced production approach.

Phillips’ original featured expanding electronic beats supporting Herring’s vocals and Sudan Archives’ distinctive style. Armon-Jones reimagines this foundation, likely emphasising the rhythmic elements that made the original work while adding his signature keyboard touches. Night Time Stories continues its knack for pairing complementary artists across different sonic territories.

The original “Tall Tales” came from Kennebec’s sophomore album “Without Star or Compass”, where Phillips aimed to write “for my friends and others rather than for myself.” His collaboration with Herring developed naturally after they clicked on shared ideas, culminating in a three-day Portland recording session. Herring’s lyrics balanced “magic and folklore in the natural world” with narrative structure.

Phillips’ background in soundtrack composition shows through his cinematic approach. He draws from JRPG music, classic film scores, and his professional work on documentaries and games. Armon-Jones’ dub treatment likely enhances these atmospheric qualities while maintaining the track’s original collaborative spirit.
